Ce 6 février 2025, le roi du reggae Bob Marley aurait eu 80 ans. Les enfants, et aujourd’hui les petits-enfants du chanteur jamaïcain décédé en 1981 à 36 ans, sont nombreux à avoir repris le flambeau et à défendre cette musique. RFI Musique en a sélectionné dix : Ziggy, Stephen, Julian, Ky-Mani, Damian, Jo Mersa, Yohan, Skip, Zion et YG.

Tout commence comme en 1980, dans un concert de la tournée Uprising qui a consacré le statut de star de Bob Marley pour la postérité. Les premières notes de « Natural Mystic » se font entendre, hypnotiques à souhait, avec cette basse lourde et pénétrante qui remplit l’espace en un instant en emportant sur son passage toute possibilité de rester immobile. Dans la pénombre, cinq fils Marley font leur entrée, l’un derrière l’autre. Puis chacun leur tour, ils s’avancent sur le front de scène pour interpréter un passage de ce classique du répertoire de leur père.

À l’occasion du 80e anniversaire de sa naissance, ils ont eu l’idée de se réunir sous le nom de « Marley Brothers » pour une série d’hommages en live, intitulée Legacy Tour, qui a débuté en Amérique du Nord fin 2024 et devrait se poursuivre cette année. L’évènement n’est pas tout à fait inédit : déjà en 2005, en Éthiopie, terre chère au mouvement rasta, les cinq mêmes s’étaient associés le temps d’une célébration en grande pompe devant plus de 200 000 personnes sur la place Meskal d’Addis-Abeba pour les 60 ans de leur géniteur.

Les Melody Makers ou Marley Four

Avant même d’être en situation d’assumer l’héritage paternel, c’est déjà de façon collective qu’une partie de la nombreuse progéniture du chanteur a débuté dans la musique. À quatre de ses douze enfants (onze reconnus de son vivant) réunis sous le nom de Melody Makers, Bob fait enregistrer en 1979 la chanson « Children Playing In The Sreets » qu’il a écrite quelques années plus tôt. Trois mois après sa mort, ils sont aux côtés de leur mère Rita pour se produire sur la scène du Sunsplash, principal festival de l’île et vitrine du reggae.

Dans le quatuor, tous chantent, mais c’est l’aîné des garçons, Ziggy, né en 1968, qui tient le rôle principal et finit par incarner le groupe, à l’image de ce qui s’était produit avec son père et le trio original des Wailers. Aux États-Unis, les succès commerciaux se multiplient à la fin des années 80, notamment pour « Look Who’s Dancing », qui connaîtra une deuxième vie en tandem avec la Nigériane Yemi Alade en 2021. Très productif puisqu’à son actif, il totalise pas moins de vingt albums grâce auxquels il a remporté huit Grammy Awards, Ziggy Marley a aussi supervisé le biopic Bob Marley : One Love sur les écrans en 2024.

Son cadet Stephen, né en 1972, d’abord dans l’ombre de son frère au sein des Melody Makers avec ses sœurs Sharon et Cedella, s’en est émancipé à partir du milieu des années 90 : un featuring avec les Fugees sur une reprise de « No Woman No Cry » a mis en évidence la ressemblance de sa voix avec celle de Bob. Parallèlement à sa carrière de chanteur, c’est dans le champ de la production qu’il s’est depuis illustré : en 2001, il dépoussiérait le patrimoine familial avec Chant Down Babylon, un album de duos virtuels entre son père et quelques représentants du rap américain et du r’n’b.

Entraide familiale

Deux autres fils Marley, de mère différente, ont bénéficié du soutien de Stephen pour développer leurs propres répertoires et se faire un prénom. Si leurs liens réels avec le roi du reggae ont été peu fréquents, sinon quasi inexistants, ils ont été accueillis chaleureusement au sein du noyau familial historique, quel que soit l’environnement dans lequel chacun avait grandi.

Julian, né en 1975 en Grande-Bretagne où il a été élevé, est un multiinstrumentiste qui a fait ses premiers pas comme chanteur sur le circuit international avec Damian, le benjamin de la fratrie, venu au monde en 1978 et fils de Miss Monde. Le premier, surnommé Juju Royal, est longtemps resté proche du reggae académique avant d’évoluer vers des sonorités plus modernes sur le projet Colors of Royal distingué en 2024 par le Grammy Award du meilleur album reggae ; le second, appelé aussi Junior Gong, a été davantage influencé par le dancehall, version plus urbaine de la musique jamaïcaine et le rap, comme le rappelle son album Distant Relatives en duo avec l’Américain Nas.

Comme Julian et Damian, Ky-Mani, né en 1976, a sorti son premier album en 1996. Like Father Like Son, puisant dans la discographie de Bob, était un de ces passages obligés avant d’aller explorer des envies artistiques plus personnelles déclinées depuis sur six albums. Lui qui a vécu dans la campagne jamaïcaine avant d’émigrer à Miami avec sa mère, ancienne championne nationale de tennis de table, a d’abord été attiré par le sport. Il s’est également essayé au cinéma, dans les long-métrages Shottas (2002) et One Love (2003).

La troisième génération

Un nouveau passage de témoin s’est produit depuis une décennie : les petits-enfants de Bob ont pris le relai, à commencer par Jo Mersa dont les premières chansons ont suscité un vif intérêt dans le monde du reggae, toujours un peu plus attentif et prêt à s’enthousiasmer lorsqu’un talent semble éclore dans les rangs de la famille Marley. Malheureusement, le fils de Stephen est décédé en 2022 à 31 ans. Yohan, son jeune frère qu’il avait encouragé en partageant le micro avec lui sur « Burn It Down », lui a emboité le pas. Le trentenaire se contente jusqu’à présent de mettre sur le marché des chansons au fil de l’eau, comme le récent « Overflow » avec Jesse Royal et Jahshii, deux artistes jamaïcains symbolisant le renouveau du reggae.

Dans la foulée de son premier single, son cousin Skip, fils de Cedella, s’est retrouvé en 2015 aux côtés de ses oncles Stephen et Damian sur la tournée Catch A Fire, organisée pour célébrer les 70 ans de Bob. Depuis, il a collaboré avec Katy Perry, Popcaan, Rick Ross ou encore Major Lazer. En 2023, il était en duo avec le Nigérian Rema sur le projet Africa Unite, un album qui revisitait le répertoire de Bob Marley à travers le prisme afrobeats.

Les deux plus jeunes, arrivés récemment sous les projecteurs, sont des enfants de la chanteuse Lauryn Hill, auxquels l’ex-Fugees n’a pas manqué de faire une place sur sa récente tournée internationale The Celebration Continues. Hors du giron maternel, Zion, 27 ans, s’est fait remarquer en 2024 en s’inspirant pour « Best Of Me » du tube de son grand-père « So Much Trouble ».

De son côté, YG, 23 ans, samplait « Crisis », un autre classique, pour en faire « Praise Jah In The Moonlight », à l’origine d’une déferlante sur les réseaux sociaux. Ce premier hit viral du reggae, présent sur des millions de vidéos TikTok et Instagram et vues à plusieurs milliards de reprises, souligne un peu plus l’aspect intemporel, voire indémodable des chansons de Bob Marley
