5 avril 2024. Kaba Diawara est nommé à la tête de l’équipe olympique guinéenne. Une nomination dont se réjouit le natif de Toulon : « Lorsqu’on est un amoureux du sport, c’est une fierté de participer aux Jeux Olympiques. »

Ce rendez-vous tient donc une place bien particulière dans le cœur du Guinéen, biberonné par les exploits de Carl Lewis et de Sergueï Bubka.

Participer à cette édition 2024 qui aura lieu à Paris, une ville que le tacticien connaît sur le bout des doigts après y avoir défendu les couleurs du PSG au début des années 2000, rend nostalgique l’ancien attaquant. « J’ai l’impression de faire un bond dans le temps. Il y a plus de 20 ans, le Parc des Princes était mon jardin. Dire que j’ai la possibilité d’y revenir sous une casquette m’émeut d’une certaine façon et je me rends compte du chemin que j’ai parcouru », s’exclame-t-il.

Pour accomplir son rêve, le champion de France 1999 avec les Girondins de Bordeaux devra franchir une dernière marche : en barrage, il devra battre l’équipe asiatique arrivée quatrième lors de la Coupe d’Asie des Nations U-23 de l’AFC. Le duel se tiendra le 9 mai du côté de Clairefontaine, en France.

« La seule option pour y arriver est la victoire. Notre quatrième place lors de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations U-23 de la CAF, a rallongé le chemin vers Paris, mais on y croit dur comme fer », confie le sélectionneur.

Ses espérances, sa vision de l’évolution du football guinéen et son projet : Kaba Diawara se livre en toute sincérité à la FIFA.

FIFA : Dans quel état d’esprit êtes-vous à quelques jours de ce barrage olympique ?

Kaba Diawara : C’est un mélange de sentiments qui se bousculent. Je suis à la fois tendu, honoré et fier. En 1968, la Guinée avait participé au Tournoi Olympique en tant qu’invitée. Pour cette édition, il va falloir aller chercher notre qualification sur le terrain. C’est une pression en plus.

Comment décrivez-vous le style de jeu des équipes asiatiques ?

Ce sont des sélections qui sont très bien organisées. La discipline est au cœur de leur système de jeu. Elles sont aussi très endurantes. Les sélections venues d’Asie ont cette particularité de ne rien lâcher. À nous de trouver les solutions pour contrer l’équipe qui nous fera face le 9 mai prochain, en apportant de la vitesse et une véritable opposition physique. Il va falloir rester concentré car ce barrage olympique, c’est une finale NBA disputée au match sept, on n’a pas le droit à l’erreur.

Quel sera le piège à éviter lors de ce barrage ?

Dominer et ne pas marquer, à l’image de ce qui s’est passé pour la Guinée lors de la CAN 2023. Il va falloir être efficace, être réaliste dès la première occasion. Il ne faudra pas laisser de place aux fautes, rester concentrés et appliqués afin d’éviter d’être punis sur une contre-attaque ou un penalty.

En cas de qualification, la Guinée sera versée dans le Groupe A avec la France, les États-Unis et la Nouvelle-Zélande. Quelles sont vos impressions ?

Comme à la CAN, la Guinée est dans le groupe de la mort. On n’a pas le temps de se reposer ou de calculer. Tant mieux d’une certaine manière pour nous. Il faut dire que nous ne sommes pas bons lorsque nous prenons nos aises. Pour ce tournoi, il faut maintenir une certaine pression et c’est dans ce domaine qu’on excelle. Si la fédération a fait appel à notre staff, c’est pour qu’on amène de la rigueur et du sérieux à cette équipe olympique. On va s’y atteler dès à présent car l’échéance est courte. On n’a qu’un seul match, ça passe ou ça casse.

Que représenterait une participation de la Guinée à ce Tournoi Olympique ?

Cela justifierait nos progrès. Lorsque j’ai pris la tête de la sélection et que j’ai présenté mon projet aux dirigeants, j’ai tout de suite dit qu’il fallait miser sur notre jeunesse, qu’il fallait apporter des bases solides pour les dix prochaines années. On s’est qualifiés deux fois de suite pour la CAN où on a franchi un palier en atteignant les quarts de finale lors de la dernière édition. On progresse. Une grande partie des joueurs qui étaient présents en Côte d’Ivoire sont éligibles pour les JO, ce qui validerait le projet proposé. Puis il ne restera plus qu’une étape : une participation à la Coupe du Monde. Si cela se passe comme prévu, j’aurai rempli mon contrat à 100 %.

Vous êtes né en France où vous avez effectué une bonne partie de votre carrière de footballeur. Des JO à Paris, quelle importance cela revêt-il pour vous ?

La boucle serait bouclée ! Participer aux Jeux Olympiques, c’est un rêve que je veux accomplir. J’ai été biberonné aux JO, les premiers que j’ai regardés sont ceux de Los Angeles en 1984. Pour l’anecdote, les performances de Carl Lewis avaient tellement marqué ma famille qu’on surnomme mon grand frère Lewis.

Si on arrive à se qualifier, je me dis que la Guinée pourrait fouler la pelouse du Parc des Princes, là où j’ai évolué. Cela serait très émouvant pour moi et pour la sélection qui compte de nombreux binationaux d’origine française.

Si vous deviez mettre en avant la performance d’un sportif ou d’une sportive dans le passé aux JO, tous sports confondus, qui choisiriez-vous ?

Impossible de n’en sortir qu’un. Pour moi, les JO c’est Sergueï Bubka, Carl Lewis en 1984, Michael Jordan en 1992, les titres olympiques de Teddy Riner, j’ai toutes leurs performances en tête. Les Jeux Olympiques, c’est au-delà du sport pour moi, c’est de l’émotion, des médailles d’or, des hymnes nationaux et représenter son pays sur un podium. On a beau avoir joué des Ligue des champions de l’UEFA, des CAN ou avoir marqué de très beaux buts, les JO en termes d’émotions, c’est très fort.

Je n’imagine même pas la folie que cela sera au pays si on arrive à avoir une médaille. Rien qu’avec un quart de finale à la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations, nous avions reçu un accueil chaleureux, alors revenir avec une médaille olympique autour du cou, cela serait grandiose.
